Let’s Be Honest About the Wedding Industry
Let’s face it,the wedding industry is expensive. Outrageously so sometimes.
If we’re being completely transparent, most would happily hand the camera over to Aunt Stephanie or Uncle Bob if you actually trusted them to capture the day the way it needs to be remembered. No missed moments, no awkward lighting, and no worrying about whether the blurry dancing shots or overexposed family photos will be your only record of the night.
So, why do we actually hire a professional wedding photographer? And more importantly, how do you decide when to take a chance on someone who is just "growing their portfolio" versus investing in someone experienced?
The truth is, the answer looks completely different for every couple.

The Portfolio-Builder

Often much easier on the wallet, but still learning. We all have to start somewhere, but as long as you keep the realistic expectation that what is promised, may not be what you get. Experience isn't just about knowing how to use a camera; it’s about knowing how to handle chaos. A newer photographer might struggle when church lighting is pitch black, what settings do I use? When a timeline runs 45 minutes behind schedule and now we have to keep up with the increased pace. When family dynamics get tense and no one listens, who do you rely on to rangle them all up? You are trading financial savings for a bit of a gamble on their crisis-management skills, hoping they know how to correctly and quickly adjust proper settings running from the bright ceremony to the indoor reception.
At the end of the day, there is NOTHING wrong with hiring a portfolio building photographer, as long as the expectation is real. Let's not be mad at the new photographer because your memories didn't come out as you hoped, that's the risk taken.

*Passionate: I take pride in my work, and my goal is always for you to feel like this was so easy, while receiving images you can't wait to print.
So, where do I fit into all of this?
With 8 years behind the camera and multiple weddings under my belt, I’m not a rookie figuring it out on the fly, and my goal is to deliver a memorable experience, not just photo memories. For the past eight years, my home has been in the intimate world of boudoir and portrait photography. If you’ve ever stepped in front of a camera for a portrait session, you know how vulnerable it feels. Boudoir and portrait work taught me the absolute bedrock of my craft: how to work my camera and all of its settings, how to read a person’s body language, how to light every unique body type, and how to find the exact angle that makes someone look and feel like a masterpiece. I know how to make you feel safe, confident, and completely at ease when it matters most.
And then, there’s the other side of my world: I serve as the Lead photographer for Portland Fashion Week.
If you want to talk about pressure, try backstage at a runway show. It is a controlled cyclone of sudden chaos—designers scrambling, hair and makeup running behind, models flying past, and lighting changing on a dime. There are no do-overs when the dress is walking down the ramp right now and then gone in just seconds. not just one of them, but one after another constant movement.
That environment didn't just teach me how to shoot fast; it taught me how to stay completely, unflappably calm when the timeline blows up and the unexpected happens!
When you hire me, you aren't just getting someone with a fancy camera. You’re getting eight years of mastering how people actually look and feel their best, paired with the runway-tested grace under fire to handle whatever your wedding day throws our way—all while keeping you laughing and present in the moment.

We got the most beautiful photos done by Wayne. We had never done a photo shoot and were nervous about being in front of the camera but he made us feel comfortable and had us laughing the entire time.
He took us on with short notice while we were in town and was incredibly reasonable considering the quality of his photos.
Wayne and his wife are a true talents in their community and Portland is lucky to have them. We can’t wait to share our photos.
